So what are these plaques? These plaques are actually the build up of cholesterol and other substances that accumulate in the arteries. If they don’t go away soon, they can lead to hardening of the arteries, which is known as atherosclerosis. With atherosclerosis, the blood that flow through the arteries doesn’t carry oxygen and nutrients anymore and becomes thicker causing blood clots to form and plaque to grow in the affected area which causes the pain and discomfort.
